Metal and Bead Couture - Hollywood's Era of Wearable Materials November 27, 2015 06:34 11 Comments

No one would question Hollywood’s role in trendsetting. For decades, the silver screen and the stars that make it shine have been establishing new fashion trends and transforming unconventional materials into tried-and-true outfit elements.

After all, it was Hollywood that convinced us to transition from flared jeans to skinnies, despite the Oh heck no resistance it spawned for a few years. And without star power fueling the trend, we never would have allowed jumpsuits to come into style … yet here they are, and people are rocking them, too.

What’s coming down the pipeline now? Well, we’re thinking wearable materials – some truly unconventional materials – may just be the next it thing.

From the Emmy's to the VMAs, Hollywood's Elite are incorporating beads, chains and other metals into red carpet-worthy outfits transforming them into cutting-edge, trendsetter status.

Precious Metals

Consider Taraji P. Henson In Alexander Wang at the 2015 Emmy Awards. Her flowing gown with a triangular cutout is classy with an edge… right up to the chain substituting for straps at her shoulders. It was not a surprise that her gown appeared on Best Dressed lists everywhere.

Or Claire Daneswhose Prada dress also made Vogue's Emmy's Best Dressed, featured more chain straps and glimmering bead arrays.

And let’s not forget Kylie Jenner, whose smoking dress at the American Music Awards is half leather, half chainmail.

Intricate Beading

Metal isn’t the only thing vying for “wearable” status. Beads want that honor too.

Jennifer Lopez did a fabulous job hosting the 2015 AMAs this year. One of her many outfit changes (known as 'The Naked Dress') appeared to be made of sheer fabric with extremely well placed small silver beads.

Also at the AMAs, Ciara’s dress looked like a piece of art delicately created from beads..… and air.

And Beyoncé? No one slays like Queen B. While media outlets across the globe described her as “nearly nude” at the 2015 Met Gala, the overall effect was beautiful and fearless.

Where Can You Get These Looks?

All of these styles complement the ordinary wearer who doesn’t possess a runway, and can be worn without revealing Beyoncé-amounts of skin.

Jewel Strraps Jewel Straps are metal bra straps that offer a stylish replacement to ordinary bra straps.

 Body Chain

.

full-body chain is an all too sexy add-on to any club dress or bikini.

Bottom Line? Metals and beads are usually showcased through accessories to dress up an outfit. Hollywood is commanding us to step it up and incorporate metals and beads into the outfit itself as the new normal. Are we welcoming this with open arms or dragged feet? Has anyone started rocking this new trend?
